shiseido art egg 7

For over ninety years since it opened in 1919, the Shiseido Gallery has been promoting Shiseido's corporate ideal of “discovering and creating new value.” Among the Gallery's activities is the “shiseido art egg,” a program that opens its doors to promising new artistic talents and offers them a place to present their creativity in public exhibitions.
For this year's 7th shiseido art egg, the Shiseido Gallery received 293 applications from all over Japan.
Among them, the Gallery is pleased to welcome three talented new artists―Tsuyoshi Hisakado, Jomi Kim, Masumi Kawamura―who will be exhibitiong in solo shows in the Shiseido Gallery. We hope you enjoy the three different worlds of artistic expression presented by these artists at the forefront of a next generation.

Tsuyoshi Hisakado  January 8th (Tue) - 31st (Thu), 2013

  • That, it, this, which is.  2012

Tsuyoshi Hisakado creates installation works using sound and light. For this exhibition he creates two completely different spaces―representing a house in the larger gallery, and an office in the smaller gallery―imbuing objects like a water well and a trash can with various lighting effects, and including sound effects like the sound of a girl's murmur and the roar of an airplane. The effect is like watching a single scene in a film in which there are no people present, and through the technique of repeating the same effects at defined intervals we are made aware of subtle changes occurring in the repetition of days and the beauty inherent in chance and coincidence.

Jomi Kim  February 5th (Tue) - 28th (Thu), 2013

  • houses I have lived  2006

Jomi Kim uses everyday objects around us to create works. On the floor of the larger gallery she arranges deodorizer beads in the shape of a puddle that slowly evaporate, and around this places objects like combs weaved with hair and false eyelashes, as well as photographs tracing the changes they undergo over time. In the smaller gallery she presents works including helium balloons gradually falling as their gas leaks out.
Kim has affection for the ways in which trivial items around us change gently with the passage of time, and her work highlights the transient beauty inherent in traces of the mundane everyday.

Masumi Kawamura  March 5th (Tue) - 28th (Thu), 2013

  • Mirror Portraits  2012

Masumi Kawamura creates works around family themes like “mother and daughter” and communication. For this exhibition she presents still photograph-like images of women on dual screens, along with monologues about their mothers through the voices of third-person women. The personal “mother and daughter” story told through interviews by Kawamura herself comes to the surface as an abstract “mother and daughter” portrait through the process of having it read aloud by a third party, and the attempt is to have this unconsciously stir memories in the viewer as well. The entrance hall to Kawamura's exhibit displays some portraits of pregnant women, an expressive symbol of the beginning of a family.
