Evolution of the Tsubaki-kai
| First Tsubaki-kai 1947 — 1954 |

Japanese painting was featured in the spring, Western painting in the fall. |

From this point on both Japanese and Western style painters began exhibiting together. |

It began with a combination of Japanese and Western style painting, and sculpture was added from the 9th exhibition. |
| Fourth Tsubaki-kai 1993 — 1997 |

Two of the artists, Gyoji NOMIYAMA and Masakazu HORIUTI exhibited every year, with the remaining fourteen split into two groups exhibiting every other year. |

•Painting Yasue KODAMA, Kyoko SERA, Toeko TATSUNO, Yuumi DOMOTO, Mitsuko MIWA, Naoaki YAMAMOTO •Sculpture Noe AOKI, Rury IWATA, Wakiro SUMI The Fifth Tsubaki-kai was formed on the occasion of the remodeling of the basement-level Shiseido Gallery in the Tokyo Ginza Shiseido Building into the current 5meter high "white cube" exhibitionspace. The focus remains on contemporaneity among the participating artists. |
| Sixth Tsubaki-kai 2007 — 2010 |
Yasuko IBA, Chiharu SHIOTA, Masanori SUKENARI, Kyotaro HAKAMATA, Naofumi MARUYAMA, Miwa YANAGI The Sixth Tsubaki-kai's subtitle was "Trans-Figurative". It implies transcendence of the previous image of the "Tsubaki-kai" and transcendence of each artist's previous self. From 2007 through 2009, four artists have taken turns exhibiting together in combination of four, with the lineup changing partially each year. In 2010, as their final exhibition, all six showed their new works together. |
