Returning to the foundation underlying Shiseido's "Mecenat" efforts to support up-and-coming artists, the "shiseido art egg" public exhibition series throws open the doors of the Shiseido Gallery to wide range of artistic expression. Presenting the first solo-shows in this series will be three artists selected from over 650 applicants, including Kaoru Hirano(installations), Kaeko Mizukoshi(video works), and Satoshi Uchiumi(paintings). The Shiseido Gallery has been widely acclaimed for giving over its unique space so fully and effectively to innovative artistic ideas and perspectives, and these three artists continue this trend according to the schedule below.

■Kaoru Hirano January 12th (Fri) - February 4th (Sun), 2007
- untitled -skirt- 2006
Kaoru Hirano is known for creating installation pieces by unraveling the individual threads of used fabrics such as old clothing and umbrellas and reconnecting, reweaving, and restructuring these to create new forms and spaces. For this exhibition she continues exploring this technique in a new installation created from the fibers of a woman's one-piece dress, painstakingly deconstructed by hand into individual threads and reassembled into a completely new form within the Shiseido Gallery space. In a new twist, this time Hirano has fashioned her threaded spaces in ways that allow the viewer to enter within them, compressing the separation between viewer and artistic work in an attempt to convey qualities such as "object memory" and "sense of time" inherent in the original garment.
Hirano will continue to build and change her installation throughout the exhibition period, unveiling new additions each Saturday, thus affording visitors opportunities to enjoy a continually evolving aesthetic space.
Public unveilings from 11:00AM to 7:00PM each Saturday during the exhibition period (January 13th, 20th, and 27th and February 3rd)
■Kaeko Mizukoshi February 9th (Fri) - March 4th (Sun), 2007
- In the wind 2006
Kaeko Mizukoshi creates video pieces aimed at bringing our awareness to certain ambiguous, enigmatic realms often overlooked within modern society. Taking up places like the settings of novels and locations with deep personal associations as her subject matter, she has explored the obscure realms lying between fiction and reality, between personal memory and recorded fact. In a new video work for this exhibition she introduces a cast of emblematic objects and characters to present a fictional "realm of ambiguity." Projected larger-than-life on the walls of the Shiseido Gallery, this newly created world adds an element of fiction to the unique atmospheric presence that characterizes Mizukoshi's expressive aesthetic, offering a chance to share her exploration of such enticingly enigmatic territories.
■Satoshi Uchiumi March 9th (Fri) - April 1st (Sun), 2007
- Great Chiliocosmos 2006
- Under the Colors 2004
Satoshi Uchiumi paints by covering his work surfaces with thousands upon thousands of colored dots, an approach that creates site-specific works strongly tied to each individual exhibition space. His "philosophy of painting" highlights the various relationships comprising any given painting: relationships between created work and display space, between created work and viewer, and between the colors and textures of the pigments spread across the surface of the canvas. Uchiumi has become known for his exhibits' ability to bring the viewer to a forceful awareness of these relationships inherent in painted works of art. His latest piece will stand over 9 meters long and 5 meters high, fully occupying a large swath of wall within the Shiseido Gallery. The Shiseido Gallery's unique display space, including the highest art gallery ceiling in the Ginza area, offers a wonderful opportunity to see how Satoshi Uchiumi will surpass himself once again with works of such magnitude and presence.
■shiseido art egg award
These three exhibitions are also in the running to receive the shiseido art egg award, a "best exhibition" competition judged by architect Kazuyo Sejima, artist Yukio Fujimoto, and painter Toeko Tatsuno. The results will be announced on this website in mid-April 2007, after all three shows have been concluded.
